Question by InvisibleWar: What are some software development roles in the financial industry?
I enjoy creating software and I’m also interested in the financial industry. I know software development is a wide field (anything from missile guidance to Nintendo Wii games). Please describe some which involve finance. Thanks.

I’m not sure what you are asking. A software developer is a role and the financial industry is an application where a software developer can apply his/her skills. A software developer working for manufacturing industry is still a software developer. Change of environment doesn’t change his/her role as a developer.

If you are asking what kind of work can a software developer do in the financial industry, then the answer is lots.

A developer could be developing front end software systems like ATM, asset trading, enrollments etc as well as continue maintenance to make sure software systems are in compliance with current regulations.

A developer could work on system integration. For example, when Bank of America and MBNA merged someone has to go make sure their systems work with one another. And every institution has to make sure that their system could work with data received from checks clearing house and federal reserve.

A developer could also work with backend data analysis – economics and statistical reports. Developing automated system to detect potential fraud and other criminal acts for example.

A developer could also work on implementation and integration of packaged solution like ERP, CRM etc.

Best wishes.

I’m looking for a job in software development, particularly application development in .Net. I’m planning to visit the Dallas-Fort Worth area soon and would like to personally visit recruiters in the area to submit my resume.

What companies would order some custom software development?

Question by Olga S: What companies would order some custom software development?
Like what is the minimum revenue of the company that would order it? Or what is the minimum number of employees the company ordering it will have? I understand that 1-person or even 5-person company would not order custom software to be written – so what are the minimum requirements to qualify those companies that would order?

There are no hard and fast criteria, Its will depend on exactly what the custom software is required for, what the cost saving will be by having it, and whether it is cost and time effective to have it produced.

Small companies, less than 50 may be 100 staff, probably do not have the revenue to buy in completely custom built software but may be able to afford to have a “macro” based customisation on top of an existing product i.e. Microsoft Excel/Word via Visual Basic macro’s as opposed to a completely new spreadsheet or word processor.

On the other hand if the developer sees a market for the product over and above a single company they may be willing to develop for a small company on the cheap and retain the right to sell it on their own.
